If you thought that was funny...

One of the many tricks a teacher has to have up her sleeve is a way to get her students' attention without resorting to screaming every time. (Although that works great too.) I have a rain stick, maracas, wind chimes, a bell, as well as standard hand claps and other stuff I've learned through my internships and student teaching. The rain stick is my signal to the kids that they need to lower the decibel level but can keep talking. I use the maracas, various hand claps and other verbal and hand signals to indicate that they need to stop talking and pay attention to me.

The other day we were in the middle of a group activity and things were getting pretty loud. I had been using the rain stick with mixed results (which was good but annoying - they were really into the activity which is good, but they were really loud, which was not so good); I had tried the hand clapping stuff, also with mixed results. A few minutes later, when the decibel level had risen again, I was headed to my desk when I heard loudly and firmly from one of my students: "Dudes! Be quiet! She's going to shake her maracas!"

I don't mind at all! I'm sure they can relate to the funny stuff kids say and do.

I am one of Colleen's friends! I am glad she shared this blog. Makes me smile to read it. Enjoy your first year!

Oh, and don't feel bad... my first year was last year and I left school the second week so sick and dehydrated that I had to go to the ER to get fluids. Needless to say, I used all my sick days last year. Here's to hoping this year will be better!
