How important is Social Studies really?
I'm thinking not very because it's the one content area I bump for whatever reason may come up. Math test tomorrow and we're not done reviewing? Fire alarm earlier in the day and we didn't get a chance to have independent reading time? I can't think of a good thing to do and it zaps my will to live? It very often gets preempted. Like sleep, meals, and fun do in my life.
The point really is not that I don't want to do social studies, it's that I never feel caught up or ready enough for my days and weeks. There is always so much to do that it never gets done. I have to learn to prioritize better. That's the first thing on my list. Prioritize better.
Now, what will preempt THAT priority today?

Obviously your kids won't be able to do diddly in life if they don't learn to read & do math. Less obviously perhaps, math & reading will be one helluva lot less useful to them if they are clueless about how the world, their neighborhoods (and the people in them) think, function and are organized. QUESTION: Can I safely assume that the content of Social Studies at the 2nd & 3rd Grade level has some bearing upon the latter?

First of all, I've been checking into your blog and am finally glad to see that you are surviving!!
Yeah, we had fire drills this week...completely messed up my plan too.
Since I'm a secondary teacher, I don't have specific advice on the social studies question; but, as a parent, I heard about how my daughters hated social studies...so even if it's little bits here and there...help them learn to appreciate it!
Anxious to hear more about your day!

I'll send you a copy of Midge Rendell's thoughts on the subject. Suffice it to say that Midge thinks that it is important for people to know their rights.
